Description: <abstract>The dataset shows the marine aids to help the navigation around Ireland. The Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL) are the statutory authority for the provision of Aids to Navigation (AtoN) for the mariner engaged in general navigation around the coast of Ireland. Navigation aids include buoys, lighthouses, beacons, and radio sites. These serve to guide mariners around coastlines. For both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the CIL are the statutory authority for the provision of AtoN. These aids are located at over 230 sites, and consist of both onshore and offshore fixed structures. Buoys, lightships and Large Automatic Navigational Buoys (LANBYs) have been located in areas where water levels are too deep or lighthouses would be too expensive or impractical to construct. These floating objects are anchored to the seabed. Their distinctive shapes and colors indicate their purpose and how to navigate around them.
