Description:
Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs) are protected areas that represent the best of our wildlife and geological sites that make a considerable contribution to the conservation of our most valuable natural places. The law relating to ASSIs is contained in the Environment Order (Northern Ireland) 2002, Part IV. NIEA must declare land as an ASSI if it is of special scientific interest because of the flora or fauna that is found on it, or because of geological features. Areas of Special Scientific Interest (ASSIs) include some of the most spectacular and beautiful habitats, including large wetlands teeming with birds, wildflower meadows, shingle beaches, remote uplands, moorland and peat bogs. However, most are in private ownership. When an area is designated as an ASSI, a right of public access is not granted.
<metadata>https://www.opendatani.gov.uk/dataset/areas-of-special-scientific-interest</metadata> <external>https://www.daera-ni.gov.uk/topics/land-and-landscapes/areas-special-scientific-interest</external>
